Practice areas:
prison law

The Members of One Paper Buildings recognise that convicted prisoners often require assistance and representation throughout their Prison sentence and sometimes beyond.

The team has close links with Solicitors contracted with the Legal Services Commission to provide Prison Law services; thus whilst a Prisoner is unable to instruct a barrister from One Paper Buildings directly, Chambers is well-able to point a Prisoner towards an appropriate Solicitor. Alternatively One Paper Buildings is happy to accept referrals from any Solicitor countrywide.

Parole Board hearings are unlike Court hearings in procedure and content and the importance of Parole Board hearings cannot be overstated to those affected.  Usually there are lengthy periods between hearings and Prisoners therefore need to grasp their chance to progress/ be released and may require expert assistance to maximise their chances of progression/ release.

One Paper Buildings boasts a team of experienced Barristers with passion to assist those within the Prison system many of whom at times feel “lost”, “stuck” or even “forgotten” within the system.

The team recognise that with such applications Prisoners are understandably nervous, sometimes frustrated and usually very concerned for their, and their family's future. To that end the team work hard to put the Prisoner at his or her ease and to present the Prisoner's case as strongly and effectively as possible. The team is happy to travel throughout the country to represent Prisoners.

One Paper Buildings team of Advocates are used to appearing at Parole Hearings.  They are also experienced in representing Prisoners at Prison Adjudications, and the team also have expertise in assisting Life prisoners in their appeals.

The team are able to represent all categories of prisoners serving mandatory and discretionary life sentences as well as indeterminate IPP sentences at Parole Board hearings and also at hearings challenging recall to Prison.
