Experience
Karim Khalil has been "recommended in crime" for
many years in the Chambers & Partners Directory.
He
spent three years on the Professional Conduct and Complaints Committee
of the Bar.
He acted as an approved pupil supervisor
for 15 yearsPractice
Karim Khalil has built up a substantial defence and prosecution
practice in Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and London and the
surrounding counties, appearing in many serious and high profile
cases.
He advised successfully a former Government
scientist investigated in the Porton Down "chemical testing" enquiry.
He was also instructed as junior counsel to prosecute the Soham
murder trial, and continued as the second Silk after his appointment.
He was the first Counsel engaged to represent
Steve Wright (serial Suffolk murderer).
Karim Khalil has an unblemished record in successfully
prosecuting and
defending in a number of baby shaking/assault cases and has a
significant interest in the medical issues involved.
Karim Khalil writes the chapter on Confiscation Proceedings in "Fraud: Law, Practice and Procedure" published by Butterworths. Other members of Chambers assist in the research.
Karim Khalil and Angela Rafferty prepared the submissions of the South Eastern Circuit for the Law Commission Consultation Paper No 173 on "Partial Defences to Murder".
Karim Khalil has a close working relationship with a number of eminent scientists within the University of Cambridge and has developed a significant interest in the botanical and earth sciences, successfully cross examining a number of experts in a variety of murder cases. R-v-Hill is one example of acquittal at the close of the Crown case following successful cross-examinations of experts in palynology and mineralogy.
