Practice
Nicola defends and prosecutes in London and across the South Eastern and Western Circuits, in both Magistrates’ and Crown Courts. Her particular interests lie in sexual, violence and drug offences, particularly involving young people. Most recently, she has been instructed in cases involving incitement of a girl under 16 years to engage in sexual activity; sexual touching of a girl under 16 years; robberies by young people; production of cannabis on a commercial scale; and arson involving teenage co-defendants and witnesses.
She also has experience in road traffic offences, defending both privately paying and publicly funded clients, and has successfully argued applications for special reasons and exceptional hardship.
She is very experienced in and has a particular interest in youth work and dealing with child witnesses. Although she is primarily concerned with representing young people in the Youth and Crown Courts, she is also a trained and volunteer Community Panel Member for the Youth Offending Team in the London Borough of Southwark, drawing up and reviewing referral order contracts for young people. Recently, she appeared at the Court of Appeal to appeal a sentence of 2 years pursuant to s.91 of the Powers of Criminal Courts (Sentencing) Act 2000 as wrong in principle for a 15 year old convicted of robbery and this was substituted with and reduced to an 18 month Detention and Training Order.
Nicola has prosecuted for the Youth Offending Services and Probation for breaches of Community and Suspended Sentence Orders. In addition, she has experience of contested ASBO hearings, representing both adults and young people.
Nicola has more recently developed her practice in defending individuals with mental health disorders and is keen to do further work in this area, both with regard to obtaining hospital orders with restriction requirements and mental health treatment within the community.
Before coming to the Bar, Nicola worked in politics for three years, as an advisor, researcher, consultant and speech writer on environmental and energy policy. She has worked for both Members of Parliament and the Lords at Westminster and Members of the European Parliament, advising on European and national legislation concerning such issues as planning, waste management, water regulation and energy supply and use. She is keen to use this experience in environmental and planning law and regulatory offences.
