Practice
Although practising principally on the Western Circuit Robert Bryan is happy to receive instructions nationwide and does regularly appear off Circuit. Robert both prosecutes and defends as he strongly believes that by not confining himself he is better able to bring a more rounded perspective and objectivity to his work to the benefit of lay clients; knowledge of the likely approach of the opposition in a trial is invaluable in making tactical decisions.
As both Junior and Leading Junior his work covers the wide spectrum of serious crime including Homicide, Rape (including historic complaints of sexual abuse), serious fraud and drug conspiracies; he has prosecuted and defended in a number of Causing Death by Dangerous Driving cases. As Junior alone he has successfully defended Attempted Murder. He was instructed as Junior Counsel for the Defendant in an ‘Anarchist Cookbook’ terrorism case described as being the largest collection of such material seized by the Police.
Whether Leading or Junior he is known for his careful attention to detail and methodical approach to cases.
Robert has been involved in many cases involving drug importation, duty evasion, benefit frauds, and money laundering; he has prosecuted on behalf of the Department of Works and Pensions and HM Customs and Excise as Junior Counsel to the Attorney General's panel of Prosecuting Counsel. He is often asked to advise on matters of confiscation, forfeiture and restraint. He has an interest in Health & Safety and other regulatory work. He appears before Military Courts both in the United Kingdom and abroad.
He is known for being approachable and engaging well with clients; he has considerable experience of handling high-maintenance lay clients; he is particularly noted for sensitive handling of child witnesses, victims of sexual offences and other vulnerable adults, and generally for dealing with witnesses and juries with courtesy.
He is an approved Pupil Supervisor, an approved Advocacy Trainer and is a member of the Committee of the Western Circuit.
