Practice
Ruth Ball prosecutes and defends predominantly in London and across the Western Circuit. To date Ruth has been instructed in a wide variety of cases, particularly, serious violent offences, sexual offences, benefit fraud and dangerous dog offences.
As junior counsel, Ruth is regularly instructed in drug conspiracy and fraud cases. Her experience has ranged from a difficult prosecution of a police officer in a child rape case to a complex mortgage fraud in which she was instructed to represent the solicitor. This case raised a number of interesting questions on the issue of apportionment under the Proceeds of Crime Act. Other recent noteworthy cases include a conspiracy to steal and burgle case with a value in excess of £35,000 (R v Bulloch) and a conspiracy to burgle and handle stolen goods case concerning a significant number of stolen antiques from stately homes and museums along the South Coast (R v JB). She continues to be instructed upon POCA cases and regulatory work is a growing part of her practice.
In addition, Ruth has been responsible for compiling advocacy training material for presentation to different agencies, with Louisa Bagley. They plan to continue this training and seminar programme with other colleagues in Chambers.
