Pupillage &
Tenancy
One Paper Buildings offers up to two 1st
six-month pupillages each year, commencing in October. The pupillages
can be extended to include a second six pupillage. Pupils are
trained as prospective tenants. All pupillages are
fully funded. The level of funding offered for 1st six pupillage
is £5,000, paid in
instalments at the end of each month. Travel expenditure is fully
re-imbursed in addition to the award. [This figure is reviewed
regularly by the Pupillage Committee and increased as appropriate.] £5,000
earnings are guaranteed for the second six months, calculated on
a monthly basis.
We welcome applications from
both law and non-law graduates. Our work is intellectually demanding
and there is keen competition for places. We therefore expect candidates
to have acheived, or to be expected to achieve, at least a 2:1
degree.
As Chambers is not a member of
the On-Line Pupillage Application System (OLPAS), applications
for pupillage are by curriculum vitae and covering letter. Chambers
encourages CV’s to be concise
but with all relevant detail. Covering letters should be brief
but give an indication of the applicant’s motivation and
expectations from pupillage
Application process
Applications
can be made from the second year of university onwards by those taking a law
degree, or from PGDL students whose first degree is not in law. We welcome applications
one year in advance (in 2004 for pupillage in October 2005, or in 2005 for pupillage
in October 2006).
Applications for pupillage should
be made by 15 th September in the relevant year. An initial assessment
is made on the basis of CV and covering letter, and thereafter
candidates may be invited for interview. Chambers conducts two
rounds of interviews. In the first interview applicants are expected
to answer specific legal/ethical questions. In the second interview
candidates are asked to undertake an advocacy exercise.
