Third Six pupillage
A personal profile
Ruth Ball
At
One Paper Buildings Third Six pupillage is far from the hellish
nightmare we all know it can be. At the outset you are told that
Chambers has recruited you with a view to offering you a tenancy.
This is reflected in both the work you do and the way members of
Chambers treat you.
As a third six pupil you can expect to
be in court nearly every day both defending and prosecuting.
Most days you will be in the Magistrates’ Courts, although
there will be appearances in the Crown Court. You can expect
good quality work, which rarely includes first appearances. Appearances
are on both Circuits, so expect to travel on a daily basis.
There is a strong sense of support at One Paper Buildings. You
are actively encouraged to ask for advice: at an early stage I
was told that it shows good judgment to ask, rather than try to
deal with any uncertainty alone. Both the junior and senior members
of Chambers bear out that attitude and are equally keen to assist
you.
The Clerks are equally approachable and do not hesitate to help,
as and when you inevitably need advice. Such a helpful relationship
is all too often a rarity for a pupil.
Above all, One Paper Buildings provided me with a platform to
develop and expand my practice in a hard working and supportive
environment that culminated in tenancy.
